My Advent Calendar DIY

This is the first year I have ever made an advent calendar and I don't necessarily know that I would have made one if I had found one in the stores. I just could not find any in my local shops! How weird. So out of frustration of not being able to find one, I started thinking of ways I could make my own. Trying to think of things I had around the house...something with compartments that could be used to put goodies in... it HIT ME! Why not use the extra letterpress drawer I had?!

So I got crafty with it!

- First I measured out the rectangle shapes and cut them out of kraft paper (There are about 4 or 5 different sizes that can be duplicated).

- Then I used some festive washi tape (found at Michael's) to randomly mark my compartments

- Once I got the placement, I took each piece of paper off one by one and started to number them from 1 to 25 just with a red colored pencil.

- I placed the numbers in a random fashion just to make it more fun to find the number every day, but you may choose to place them in order if you like!

- Lastly, I filled each compartment with chocolates and candies

What you'll need:

Letterpress drawer (flea markets or antique shops might have them), kraft paper, colored pencil or marker, washi tape or decorative tape, scissors or paper cutter, ruler, goodies to fill your calendar with

Let me know if you have any questions! It's such a unique and pretty way to display an Advent Calendar in your home for Christmas. I hope you enjoy this little project. If you make one of your own, I'd love to see it!

Handmade and Heartfelt December

When I left my Day Job back in August, I set out to follow my heart's passion to create work that inspires others. It has been a blessing to me, and I have had a strong feeling recently to use what I do to help the community around me. So I thought about it long and hard and decided to give a portion of my proceeds for the month of December to a couple charities close to my heart.

In my hometown of Dallas,  The North Texas Food Bank is a nonprofit organization that provides nutritious meals to hungry North Texans in 13 countiesEvery dollar donated provides three meals! They make such an impact in the community for those fighting for meals, but I'd like to help them make a bigger impact! Feed more meals to those that need it!

In Asheville, NC, the city I will be living in, Brother Wolf Animal Rescue
is a non-profit organization which operates a limited intake No Kill shelter and foster program tending to the physical and emotional needs of homeless animals. The staff and volunteers are dedicated to finding excellent homes for pets, often specializing in animals who need behavioral training or extensive medical care before being ready for adoption. I had the opportunity to visit the shelter on a recent trip to Asheville and got to walk some of the amazing dogs up for adoption. They just want someone to love them!

I hope to make a big difference for these worthy causes this December!
Please share this post with others so we can really give them a Merry Christmas! Do a little gift shopping that will give back. For more information about each charity, visit their sites here:

Exciting News!

Last year I was asked by author Jenny Doh to contribute to a book called Creative Lettering, and I'm so excited to tell you it's available for Pre-Sale!!! I was so honored to be a part of it and it was a fun challenge for me... one that I'm glad I took. The book shares artwork and creative lettering tips from some fellow artists as well as myself. So you can learn about hand lettering or pick up some new skills! I cannot wait to get a copy of my own! A BIG thanks to Jenny Doh for allowing me to contribute my work!

A Bit Bookish: Bookplate Love

Now that I have a bit more time to pick up a book and read for a while,  I've been thinking of coming up with some charming bookplate designs to put in the shop, and for myself to be quite honest :) They seem nostalgic to me and make reading all the more fun and personable.

I excitedly went on a little search for some free printable bookplates, and found some really great ones! I'm sharing with you some of my favorites...
